This rousing two-part setting of
Irvin Berlin's Alexander's Ragtime Band is excellent for an all-boy's
group although it may be sung as a two-part mixed piece. When sung
by all-boys, Part I is
appropriate for Boy Trebles and/or Cambiatas (boys in the first
phase of change) because it has a comfortable singing tessitura of A-A around
middle C) Part II is written in the bass clef and is limited to the
comfortable singing area of changing voice Baritones (the second phase of
change) of D-D (around middle C).
Andy Gaus has captured the essence
of the piece with the singers miming brass instruments and the accompaniment of
a ragtime piano part with kazoo. Your students will love it because of
it's novelty and it won't take long for Berlin's music to capture their
hearts.
See the
two-part
variable voicing chart for the options one has in voicing.
