This hymn-text is based on a traditional French carol (Les Anges Dans Nos Campagnes)). The English version that appears in most hymnals was translated in 1862 by James Chadwick. The hymn-melody was adapted from an ancient French melody by Edward Shippen Barnes in 1937. Cooper's melody-part style writing provides adolescent singers with clear accessible parts, sung individually and together.
