Come Unto Me
(click title to view and hear online)
When sung SSAB, Come Unto Me is an
excellent piece for an adult church choir with a dearth of male singers.
This setting from the book of
Matthew may be characterized as being a piece of contrast. Matthew
11: 28 begins the work set in a homophonic 20th century, dissonant
style. There is a key change followed by the setting of verse 29
which is sung acappella and is set with a much more consonant homophonic
approach. After another key change, verse 30 still offers more
contract with a fugal approach supported by a duplication of the voice
parts played on the piano. After moving back to the original key
and followed by a one measure piano interlude, Vick closes the work with
a stately unison setting of the Welsh hymn tune Meirionydd (words
by William C. Dix).
