Hava Nagilah

 

This traditional and popular Hebrew melody is very energetic and exciting.  It is characterized by a chromatic motif (introduced immediately in the piano) that permeates the music and establishes its identity.  Accelerating tempo changes promote the excitement.  The lyrics (in both Hebrew and English with a convenient syllabic pronunciation chart) have been adapted by Andy Gaus, the arranger, who provides them in either sacred or secular contexts.  This arrangement is particularly suitable for high school, collegiate, or adult choirs who have more women than men (voiced SSAB), or for early adolescent mixed choirs who are accomplished enough to enjoy performing a challenging four-part piece (SSCB voicing).  The piano accompaniment is great!
