Lift Thine Eyes

(Click the title to view and hear online)

Lift Thine Eyes appears as a chorus for women written in the key of D major in Mendelssohn's well-known Oratorio, Elijah.  In this original setting it has a comfortable singing tessitura for all three parts allowing it to be easily adapted for a mid-level early adolescent mixed choir when sung in the key of D, which herewith is the case.  Part III, written in the bass clef, is made even more comfortable for singing by young adolescent baritones whose voices are in the second phase of mutation since there are optional notes available to be sung when the part moves into the upper regions of their voices.  Plus, in some places Part III is reinforced by Part II which is sung by cambiatas, boys in the first phase of change.

This is a very easy master chorus and one worthwhile for young singers who are inexperienced at attempting great master choruses.
