Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen
Black spirituals are often put into two
categories: They are either about hardships encountered here on earth, or
the reward expected in heaven. This spiritual exemplifies the former. It
became well known to twentieth century America due to recordings by Louis
Armstrong and Lena Horne. It remains popular today.
Melody-part style compositional technique
characterizes this arrangement. The students will learn it quickly because
each part is melodic. The
four-part variable voicing chart
indicates how to use the piece with different age groups.
