HOW TO
USE THIS PIECE
Shady
Grove
This traditional Appalachian folk song has
been arranged for three-part voicing (SSC or SSA) with a simple arranging
technique which makes it easy for early adolescent choirs in mid-level grades.
It is particularly useful for 5th and 6th grade groups without early adolescent
baritones (boys in the 2nd phase of change). The unison sections are
intelligently written in a composite range which makes it particularly
comfortable for the cambiatas (boys in the first phase of change) when they sing
with the girls. The only harmony utilized is a two-part ostinato sung by
the girls to accompany two of the unison sections.
