Oh, Won't You Sit Down?
This piece is best suited for all-male
groups. The three parts include one part in the treble clef to be sung at
actual pitch by boy trebles and/or cambiatas. The other two parts are
written in the bass clef to be sung by adolescent baritones and changed voices.
As characteristic of many spirituals, it consists of question/answer dialog
throughout with the question often in the form of a section solo. Lawrence
has provided two endings. The first is in a comfortable tessitura for the
voices, whereas the second lies in the upper register of the voices providing a
more dynamic conclusion. The director may choose the ending best suited
for his/her group.
The
three-part variable voicing chart
indicates how to use the piece with different age groups.
