Deep River
This arrangement is particularly suited for
teaching choral precision. The earmark of this work is the freedom of the beat.
The piece contains several fermatas followed by breath marks which stop the
beat, hence the choir must learn to stop and start several times with precise
ensemble togetherness. The freedom allows directors to interpret the piece as they
desire. It is arranged to be sung by all-male ensembles, CCB or TCB ("T" =
treble), but since the upper part is written in the treble clef it may also be
sung by girls as well.
The
three-part variable voicing charts
indicates how to use the piece with different age groups.
