HOW TO
USE THIS PIECE
Foster Mania
Three-Part
Four-part
This up-tempo novelty piece is a medley of
three of Stephen Collins Foster’s 19th century popular songs including Oh,
Susanna, Camptown Races, and Beautiful Dreamer. It is written
in four-part variable voicings with an optional Part IV (it sounds fine with or
without it). It is designed to be sung acappella or with piano accompaniment
written in typical um-pah folk style. The first two brisk folk songs are
followed with arguably Foster’s most beautiful composition, Beautiful Dreamer.
So, the piece begins with a bang and ends with a beautiful, legato, and moving
presentation. The voice parts are very melodic which make it easy to learn. This
is a great piece for a concert featuring American folk music.
