America,
the Beautiful
America, the Beautiful
is written in Four-Part
Mixing Melody Style. It has four written parts but each of the
parts may be sung as a unison piece or you may combine any two, three,
or four-parts as you desire depending upon the current voicing of your
choir. Each of the four melodies are very fluid so the piece has
a nice legato effect. It has limited ranges and tessitura which make it
apropos for early adolescent singers, but it is also recommended for older
adolescents or adults, particularly if the choir has an over abundance of women
and just a few men.

America
Two-part Variable Voicing
Three-part Variable Voicing
Special CBB
Voicing
America is provided in three different voicings.
The arrangements are almost identical in sound. The
Two-part
Variable Voicing (click to see chart) has one part in each of the G and
F clefs whereas
Three-part
Variable Voicing (click to see chart) has two parts in
the G clef and one in the F clef. Actually Part I in the
two-part arrangement simply combines the necessary attributes of Part I & II in
the three-part arrangements. The range and tessitura limitations in all
three pieces are particularly suitable for all-boys groups. In fact, the
additional CCB voicing is only available for all-boys groups. The piano accompaniment
in all three gives strong
support to the voices and enhances the patriotic flavor of the arrangements.

For the Freedom of Man
The
lyrics for For the Freedom of Man are excerpts from the Inaugural Address
of President John F. Kennedy delivered on January 20, 1963. They are set
to music by Jack North in a noble and patriotic fashion. The rhythmic
context makes it appealing to early adolescents. Click to access

The
Star Spangled Banner
The Star Spangled Banner
is written in
Four-Part
Variable Voicing so it may be sung by early adolescents as SSCB or
SACB, by older adolescents as SSAB, SSAT, or SSA/Boys or by adults as SSAB,
SSAT, or SSA/Men. Although it is a standard four-part design, there
are several unison and two-part passages which make the piece easy to sing.
It should be performed with vigor and energy. It is supported by a
rip-roaring piano accompaniment which compliments the over-all patriotic style.
